This centerpiece by Ariella Chezar includes peaches, raspberries and clematis, achieving the perfect balance of elegance and fun. I tried to create a board that captures that feeling.

Each of the three boards I will post today draws its inspiration from one of three arrangements by Ariella Chezar that appeared in the Winter 2007 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings, in a spread called “Centerpieces with Fruit and Flowers.”

This board was created for Cole, a bride with a distinct and original idea of what she wants for her wedding. With a bespoke tweed suit for the groom, and a blend of Edwardian and roaring 20′s style for the bride, a love of birds and books, and a band composed of the couple’s friends, I wanted to pull together a board that would reflect the couple’s unique style as well as the rustic venue. Ariella’s centerpiece, which includes plums, pears and roses, seemed like a good focal point.

Mood: distinctive romance
Palette: red, purple, green, brown

I made a marigold and gray board awhile ago, but I have to say that it’s not one of my favorites. I’ve had a few more requests for a gray and yellow board, this time in more muted tones, and I think this one turned out nicely. The pale grays and yellows make me think of rain clouds and sunshine, like the beginning of spring maybe. And I cannot get over that incredible church designed by Maxim Velcovsky – the modern chairs work perfectly in the gorgeous old space.

Mood: subdued elegance
Palette: pale gray, pale sunshiny yellow, white

I am finding that I really only like red in very small doses, such as in this board. It’s such a dominant, powerful color that a little goes a long way (I mean, there’s not much red here, but see how different this board is from the all-white one I posted yesterday?). Those balloons with the number tags, from the wedding of the associate style editor for Martha Stewart Weddings, are one of my favorite examples of a non-floral centerpiece. So simple yet so dramatic. Bakers’ twine and seersucker were the inspirations for that wedding, and I tried to continue that look here. I could easily see this as a summer beachfront event where all the guests wear white or seersucker…

Mood: neat, preppy
Palette: white, minimal red
