This beautiful faux wedding comes to us from some of my very favorite people! Laurie Arons (my very own wedding planner) has teamed up with chef Tyler Florence to create some of the most elegant and delicious weddings around, and this elegant shoot at San Francisco’s Flood Mansion is just a little taste at what they can do.

I love this gray and yellow ikat tablecloth (and those fun pom-pom trimmed napkins are the same ones I had at my wedding)!

Abby Jiu sent over the photos from this sweetly simple Maryland wedding, and it’s just full of beautifully classic elements and DIY details. And I love all the little pops of red!

Says Meghan, “My husband grew up in Ireland, so he said his vows in Gaelic. We also had Irish dancing, singing and music playing at the end of the night.”

DIY centerpieces were small galvanized buckets with various live herbs, which the couple later planted in their herb garden.

The couple set up a cigar bar for their guests to enjoy after dinner.

Why did you choose this venue for your wedding?  We both enjoy learning about and experiencing history, so when choosing venues, we wanted that to be the focal point. The church was one of the first Catholic churches in Maryland (and in the United States) and Woodlawn Farm was built in 1798.

What inspired you when you were planning your wedding? With the setting having such amazing American history, we wanted the feel of the wedding to be a bit vintage, a bit Americana and most of all personal. We put a personal touch into everything from the hand drawn map of our relationship on the welcome bags, to going out of our way to include our favorite dessert (Georgetown Cupcakes), to having our pup, Murphy, be a part of the reception.

Do you have any DIY tips for other brides?  1. Pick your battles in budget and in time. If there is a pre-made item that would not be much more expensive to purchase than make, save yourself time (and sanity) and buy it. That way you can focus on other DIY projects.  2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most people want to be a part of your special day. I held a DIY wedding party where I had 15 friends over to spray paint, glue, write out, cut all my DIY projects. We had so much fun and I got a bunch of items crossed off my DIY list.

What was your favorite moment or part of the day?  Groom: Besides kissing Meghan for the first time as my wife, listening to the maid of honor’s and best man’s speeches – hilarious and they so nailed us as a couple. Bride: We were able to have a moment by the dock, just the two of us, which put everything into perspective. I also loved how our dog, Murphy, somehow walked out with us when we were introduced to the reception. If you knew Murphy, you’d know that he is usually running around, but he knew to stay by our side at that moment.

Tracy and Mike’s destination wedding is perfect in so many ways, from the stunning venue to the all white flowers to Jen Huang‘s beautiful photos of it all. The couple live in San Francisco, but chose to wed at the St. Regis Princeville on the island of Kauai – and I can tell you from personal experience, it’s one of the most gorgeous and romantic places you’ll ever go. Also, I think these photos prove that you don’t have to sacrifice style for the convenience of a hotel wedding…

Says the bride, Tracy, “We could not have imagined a more perfect day! It sprinkled earlier in the day as it does almost every day in Kauai, and we nervously checked the weather all morning. But as the ceremony started, the clouds magically parted and the sun came out.”

Says Tracy, “Mike loves dessert, especially if chocolate is involved. If it were up to him we would have had wedding cake before the first course. So for our favors, we found an Etsy vendor who would hand stamp antique silver dessert spoons with the first names of our guests. We attached to the spoons little tags that read, Life is short, eat dessert first! Our guests loved them!”

Signature cocktails were La Bonne Vie (gin, elderflower, fresh lemon juice, and mint) and a Bourbon Cooler.

Tracy shared some of the details of the day with us:

Why did you choose this for your wedding? We always knew we would someday get married on the beach, so when we got engaged we searched for the perfect beach location and struck gold with the St. Regis Princeville in Kauai. The week leading up to our wedding included everything from rope swings to late night beach parties with all our favorite people. We didn’t want the week to end! For the day of our wedding, we envisioned the night as intimate, warm, and incredibly special for all our guests. We wanted the room to be entirely candle lit and the flowers to be simple and classic white. In the end, everything seemed to fall into place effortlessly – we could not have been happier. It was the perfect end to a week of festivities!

Did you include any traditions in your wedding? My something old came from my mom. That day she gave me her diamond bracelet, and it was such sweet and unexpected surprise present right before the ceremony. My something blue came from one of my bridesmaids – a small French blue ribbon tucked into my dress. It was the same blue ribbon I had given her to wear on her wedding day less than a year before.

Laura and Justin have some of the most beautiful wedding photos I’ve ever seen – so many frame-able shots from photographer Molly Watson. Not only was their wedding stunning, it was also incredibly thoughtful and meaningful, from Laura’s lovely DIY details to the couple’s venue choice. And I just love these words of wisdom from the bride: “The best advice I received was that a wedding is only as stressful as you make it. Don’t lose perspective of the purpose of the day, which is really to create and celebrate a vast new space for love to reside in your life.”

Says Laura of the ceremony, “We were on top of a big hill overlooking 500 acres of undeveloped golden hills. The view against a big, bright blue sky was breathtaking – and I think it heightened people’s connection to our ceremony as a result. Our Rabbi was Rabbi Avram Davis from Berkeley. He has an incredible ability to bring people together through an appropriate balance of seriousness and laughter. There were only 5 Jewish people at the whole wedding so this quality was essential, as we wanted everyone to feel a part of our special day. After we signed the Ketubah, Rabbi put me and my bridesmaids together in a circle and told them they were there because I trusted them and therefore it was their job to shepherd me through all the things that marriage brings. He did the same with the groomsmen and it was very touching.”

How incredible is that oak tree?!

Laura baked shortbread and black pepper shortbread, which she packaged in glassine bags that she goccoed with a gold oak tree, as a nod to the big beautiful oak found on the Taber Ranch property. The couple’s Ketubah was displayed on the escort card table.

Laura printed the menus herself, using gold ink and doilies, which were placed under clear glass plates. The wedding cake included two flavors: Raspberry Royale (white cake soaked in raspberry syrup, filled with mascarpone and fresh raspberries) and Hazelnut Grand Marnier. The cake was wrapped in white chocolate rather than fondant, and decorated with branches and Kelsey plums.

Laura sweetly answered some questions about the day…

Why did you choose this for your wedding? We wanted our wedding to be elegant, but accessible, so we went with the theme of rustic elegance. We were so inspired by the natural beauty of Taber Ranch and we knew that our friends would find it warm, invited, and awe-inspiring. To us, getting married in the spring was symbolic – the beginning of something new. We also wanted a small wedding, where each person felt how important they were in our lives. All the love that went into making small homemade favors and invitations was a way for us to demonstrate how special these people were to us.

Do you have any DIY tips for other brides? In my case, going DIY didn’t always mean saving a lot of money. There were all sorts of materials that I needed in order to do things myself, and it probably would have been cheaper in some instances to just go out and buy them already made. So it’s a balancing act – each person needs to decide how much effort they are willing to put in order to have that “special DIY feel.”

What was your favorite moment or part of the day? The Hava Nagila was an amazing experience that made me feel really connected to the many generations of brides and grooms before me, but we added a little twist: my husband was raised Catholic and went to Notre Dame, where they have a tradition that whenever they score touchdowns, a person is thrown into the air repeatedly to celebrate (they call it push-ups). Justin’s groomsmen did that during Hava Nagila – not traditionally Jewish, but very fun!

What advice do you have for other brides? Make decisions together, with your husband-to-be. As an attorney, I didn’t have the time to do everything by myself, so I worked with my husband to divide and conquer our tasks. There were obviously some things that didn’t fit his interests, but there was always something for him to take ownership of, which he did. The process brought us closer together as a team, and I believe he felt more connected to the day as a result.

Is there anything else that helps tell the story of the day? Taber Ranch is pretty remote, but there was nothing else that compared in beauty. So we made it work – we had our friends stay at the Citizen Hotel in Sacramento, which is only 15 minutes from Sacramento International Airport, then we bused people from Sacramento the day of the wedding. We made soundtracks for 45 minute drive, and on the way back there were cocktails – everyone was able to enjoy themselves without having to worry about transportation.
