Monthly Archives: April 2012

It’s been a week full of sisters! My little sister returned to the States after a year in France, so I got a few days with her, and now I’m in San Diego visiting my big sister. I (not-so-secretly) wish for the day when both of my sisters and I live on the same street and can hang out and have last-minute dinners together and make crafty things with my nephews. I also started reading Tina Fey’s Bossypants yesterday, which is hilarious, and I definitely recommend it if you need a good laugh. What are you up to this weekend?

It’s almost warm enough for some sweet tea.

Beautiful pansy centerpiece for Mothers Day.

Etsy engagement ring round-up, via wit + delight.

How romantic is this bouquet Amy Merrick created for BHLDN?

Cutest thing ever: baby elephant on a beach.

Handmade type: a typography experiment, via Mint. So cool!

Vintage razor wrappers = inspiring design.

Beautiful blue dress in this London elopement.

New favorite dinner: chipotle sweet potato tacos. Made them twice in the last week, mmmm… via Mint.

And congratulations to Kelly Edm and Eleni, the winners of the Izola giveaway! I’ll be sending you an email about getting the gift packs to you.

Have a happy weekend, lovelies!

In honor of my sister coming home from Paris today after studying pastries for the past year, today’s post is all about cake! As yummy as simple chocolate and vanilla can be, it’s fun to imagine unique flavor combinations for your wedding cake, and as I was going through my files and Pinterest “Sweets” board, I realized that many of my favorite layer cakes came from the same place: Sweetapolita. So I decided to highlight some of the yummiest recipes from her collection… (click the images for the original recipe link).

Malted Chocolate + Toasted Marshmallow “Campfire” Cake
Salted Caramel + Chocolate Fudge Cake
Chocolate Stout Cake + Whipped Vanilla Bean Frosting
Vanilla Bean Cake + Vanilla Espresso Buttercream
Sweet Potato Ginger Cake + Brown Sugar Buttercream
Hawaiian Carrot Cake + Coconut Cream Cheese Icing
Orange Ginger Carrot Cake + White Chocolate Buttercream
Triple Lemon Blueberry Layer Cake
Dark Chocolate + Raspberry Buttercream Cake
Inside-Out Neapolitan Layer Cake
Six-Layer Dark Chocolate Cake + Strawberry Buttercream
Dark Chocolate Fudge Cake + Whipped Peppermint Icing

How yummy do these cakes look?! If you haven’t visited Sweetapolita yet, prepare to spend some time there.

Have you decided on something for your wedding cake yet? What are your favorite cake flavors? My wedding cake was alternating tiers of  Lemon Sponge Cake with Lemon Curd and Chocolate “Mahogany” Cake with Chocolate Hazelnut Truffle Cream – I’m drooling just thinking about it…
