California Wedding at Barndiva :: Emily & Zack

Emily and Zack danced the night away with their closest family and friends at such a pretty venue. We love the ceremony site beneath the string lit trees and the rustic yet elegant reception. By the looks of it, this couple had one incredibly fun and unforgettable night. Have a very happy Thanksgiving!

What was the best advice you received as a bride? Appreciate every moment of the wedding and engagement. The entire lead up to the wedding is an incredible and unique time too.

Did you include any other traditions in your wedding?  I wore my grandmother’s pearl bracelet to honor her memory.

What advice do you have for other couples in the midst of planning a wedding? Whenever the planning gets stressful, remember it’s only one day. With so much time and investment going toward the event, remember to put just as much in the relationships you’re celebrating. Helps put it all in perspective.

The Ceremony

“Any time we had a decision to make, we would ask ourselves, “how can we make this the most fun?”. With that guiding light, even the planning itself was more fun. We had the benefit and challenge of being one of the first weddings in our world of family and friends. We were flying blind but were also able to make it all we wanted it to be, without any preconceived notions. We were incredibly lucky to have huge support from family every step of the way.”

Your ceremony in three words. Joyful, classic, lighthearted

What was your ceremony music?
Processional: Instrumental of “Riptide” (Vance Joy/Vitamin String Quartet)
Recessional: “Celeste” by Ezra Vine

What were your ceremony readings? “The Master Speed” by Robert Frost and “Falling Stars” by Rainer Maria Rilke. We chose these poems to represent our hopes to be as present as possible throughout the ups and downs of life and in recognition of how lucky we are to have found each other.

What were your vows like? We wrote our vows together and decided to have them be the same. Zack shared them first and then I followed.

Who was your officiant? How did you choose him/her? Zack and I met at the end of our freshman year in a class fatefully titled “The Meaning of Life.” At the kick off of the class, we were asked to share a fun fact, and when Zack introduced himself, he shared that he has a twin sister. I too have a twin sister and was thrilled to have something so meaningful in common. Eight years later we were engaged and so honored that the professor of the course we met in, Scotty McLennan, would be our officiant. Scotty was there the day we met and an inspiration to us both since.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding ceremony? My favorite part of the ceremony was getting to stand across from Zack with all our family and friends there to support our commitment to each other. Having loved ones from every part of our lives meet each other and celebrate our relationship was a true gift. One of the most special moments of the ceremony was when my little sister, Dot, sang a song. We wanted to have a break in the middle of the ceremony to be able to reflect and take it all in. When Dot offered to sing a song for us, we couldn’t imagine a better addition to the ceremony.

Is there anything else that you’d like to share about your wedding ceremony? After walking out, we circled back to the ceremony garden to have 10 minutes alone. We loved having the time together to check in, reflect on the ceremony, and share in our excitement for the rest of the day.

What inspired you when you were planning your wedding? When we first got engaged, I went to dinner with two colleagues who had recently gotten married and managed everything brilliantly. They shared awesome advice and were amazing sources of inspiration . Some of their best advice: invite not only those who have been closest to you in the past but also those you want to play an important role in your life in the future and reserve a couple of hours every week to tackle some wedding thing with your partner (and don’t worry about it the rest of the week!).

The Reception

“We knew the day we saw Barndiva that this was the perfect location for us. In meeting the Barndiva team, we got our hopes up as it was clear that they would be so fun to work with. Upon seeing the ceremony garden, we got really excited, feeling like it may be too good to be true. The rustic outdoor dinner venue couldn’t have been better. And finally, we saw the the art studio that is used for a dance space and it sealed the deal! We felt so lucky to have found a venue that encompassed everything we were looking for.”

If you had it to do over again, is there anything you would do differently Figure out a way to slow down time :) I’m still torn about not having a video. Some days, I wish we could watch every moment. Other days, I’m glad we get to preserve the experience as it is in our pictures and memories.

Are there any DIY details you’d like to tell us about? I decided to hand write the ceremony programs (all 150, which, in retrospect, was silly). We also created the wedding favors by wrapping up mini succulents.

What was your favorite moment or part of the reception? Each speech was incredible. Everyone shared something so meaningful, and in their own way. The speeches made the night more special than we could have imagined.

Please tell us about any other special details or moments from your reception. We we’re the last ones at the reception and took a walk around the venue to take it all in. As the DJ was packing up, he shared that he’s never seen a bride and groom dance straight through from the first to last song. We we’re so proud.
