A tequila tasting party on the beach seemed appropriate for Cinco de Mayo, don’t you think? Bright colors are obvious choices for this type of celebration, but I decided to let the beach direct the palette here: sandy, salty neutrals and a soft gray blue that echoes both the ocean and the blue agave plant (used to make tequila). Something subtle, and not so theme-y. I’ve imagined: a tequila tasting bar for guests to enjoy, as well as a variety of margaritas and other mixed drinks. For the tables, air plants in glass containers look like miniature blue agave plants (and make for an unusual centerpiece), and dishes of pink sea salt suggest the salted rim of a margarita. Mexican wedding cookies (pastelitos de boda) are a sweet substitute for cake, and will withstand heat far better than buttercream can.

(Of course, none of this is to say that I don’t enjoy celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a Pacifico, some chips and guacamole…)

Lately I’ve been revisiting inspiration boards that I made (what feels like) ages ago, especially some of my earlier inspiration boards which aren’t always the most well put-together (what can I say – I’ve been learning as I go along). Today’s inspiration board is a blend of one of my very first posts and a board I recently created for Kiss the Groom, and if I were to get married in South Carolina in the spring, I think this is what I’d like my wedding to look like…

Mood: classic Southern elegance
Palette: pale French blue, magnolia blossom, Spanish moss

It’s been nearly four months since Ryan and I got married, and I am so excited to finally share our wedding with you! There are so many things I want to share, about planning and the day and the details, but I couldn’t think of a better place to start than with my inspiration board…

Mood: classic, playful
Palette: Golden Gate red, charcoal gray, winter white

A couple things about my inspiration board. Our ceremony and reception were at two separate locations, and the church really needed such little decoration, so my inspiration board focused mostly on the reception site and details, as well as the overall style we wanted for our wedding. Also, this is probably the third or fourth version of my inspiration board, which I played around with and tweaked until it felt right. Once we chose a venue and a date, the colors and feeling stayed pretty much the same, but I refined details over time. And a confession: I never actually shared my inspiration board with my vendors. (I know!) But I did use it as a way to focus my own vision, and from there narrowed down the zillions of tear sheets and stationery samples and things, and brought my (very fat) binder of saved inspiration to vendor meetings.

Charcoal and red were the perfect accents for our December wedding – not only were they seasonal without being Christmas-y, they were also colors that appeared in our venue. The buildings in the San Francisco Presidio, where our reception took place, are this wonderful combination of cream and brick red, and the walls inside the Presidio Social Club are charcoal gray. We wanted our wedding to be timeless and elegant (Grace Kelly, a traditional wedding cake, stationery with edge painting), as well as festive and playful (eggnog cocktails, a vintage photo booth, Christmas crackers). And of course, it was only appropriate to include the Golden Gate Bridge.

So how did it all turn out? Thanks to our amazing vendors, and our incredible friends and family, our wedding day was a huge success – as I said after returning from our honeymoon, I’ve never felt more present, more loved, more beautiful or more joyful in my life than I did on our wedding day. I’ll be sharing lots more this week and next, so make sure to check back in!

I love black and white with some accent colors – love it for home interiors, love it for clothing, and I love it for a wedding. As a wedding color scheme it strikes a balance of classic beauty and bold sophistication, and the addition of green foliage softens it (there’s also an itty bit of purple in the form of a Saipua arrangement with some fritillaria). I’ve also chosen romantic details like calligraphy, ribbons, and a vintage cake topper and ring. Also, with a color scheme like this, bridesmaids can wear their favorite little black dress…

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Now that I’m married to Ryan, I need a shirt that says, “Kiss me, you’re Irish.” Anyway…

I thought I’d revisit an inspiration board I made a few years ago, and re-work it with some new St. Patty’s Day finds. For a wedding in this theme, I imagine green grass and gray skies, lots of potted clover (this would be a very do-able project for the DIY-inclined), vintage Irish linens and lace. And of course a chocolate Guinness cake! A delicate clover-leaf necklace is a charming gift for your bridesmaids or flower girls (this is the same necklace that Ryan and I gave to our flower girl and our junior bridesmaid – the pendants are itty bitty and so sweet, and they also come as earrings). I think vintage St. Patrick’s Day greeting cards would be adorable – maybe as save the dates? I also think it’s hilarious how many of these vintage cards say “The Wearing of the Green.”

Anyone have fun plans for the day? Corned beef and cabbage (which I’m told they don’t actually eat in Ireland)? Wearing of the green? Whatever your plans, make sure to stop by later today, because I have the most delightful St. Patrick’s Day faux wedding to share with you – you’re going to love it, even if theme-y weddings aren’t your thing.
