I had a December wedding, in San Francisco, at a restaurant. And I loved every minute of it. BUT. I sure do love the idea of an outdoor summertime wedding in the countryside. Something that’s equal parts rustic and elegant. That takes its cue from the surroundings with earthy tones of honey and oak, and the summery green of grasses and vines. Instead of worrying about what’s trendy or overdone, worry about creating a lovely day and taking care of your guests: time your ceremony to miss the hottest part of the day, serve spiked sweet tea, keep decor to a minimum and let the natural surroundings shine. As complicated as planning a wedding can be, it can also be quite simple if you set your mind to it – I promise!

Happy March! Is spring here yet?

In my mind, I could smell lilacs the entire time I was working on this inspiration board. I love it! And this is my favorite kind of purple – the kind you find in nature, against a backdrop of green and white. I also made this board because I was feeling sort of an overdose on wedding details and trends, and wanted something that focused on just a few pretty things. One gorgeous flower, repeated. Champagne and cake, and maybe some of your aunt’s famous shortbread (with or without a personalized stamp). Lawn games and a jazz band for a sweet afternoon celebration. Lovely, but nothing fussy.

A friend is getting married later this year, and she asked me to put together an inspiration board for her using some of the elements that have already been determined. They’ve picked a date (late September) and a venue (a champagne lounge with Cream City brick walls), she’s chosen shoes and bridesmaid dresses (both in royal blue), and she wanted suggestions for non-floral centerpieces. I tried to bring all of those things together in a way that made sense, resulting in what I think is a nice balance of informal and elegant, and in colors that are rich enough for an autumn event. I stuck with mostly neutrals, allowing the royal blue to really pop. Ideas for non-floral centerpieces? Pillar candles, breadstick bouquets, and giant balloons. And of course, how can you have a party at a champagne lounge without champagne? Actually, buckets of champagne would make for excellent centerpieces themselves…

Mood: casual luxury
Palette: champagne, royal blue, chocolate, cream

Happy Valentine’s Day! Do you have any romantic plans? Did you mail paper treats to loved ones? Anyone planning on popping the question today…?

My Valentine to you comes in the form of an inspiration board. In terribly predictable colors. By accenting this nearly translucent pink with pops of very red red, I think I’ve avoided being overly sweet. I’m thinking red ink on barely pink paper, red fruit and bisque roses, perhaps bright red lipstick beneath a blush colored veil.

Mood: sweet Valentine
Palette: seashell pink, crimson red hots

If you follow anyone in the wedding industry on twitter, then you’ve probably heard all about BHLDN, Urban Outfitter’s new wedding line that’s launching on Valentine’s Day (it’s pronounced like beholden). There have been some sneak peeks around the web, and this one with the peach and gray was so lovely I just had to make an inspiration board with it. Did you check out some of the pieces from BHLDN? Do you have a favorite?
