This gray ruffly dress from Nina Ricci is one of my favorite things I’ve seen in a long time – if my legs were that long I’d have to have it for myself. Instead, I’ve done the next best thing I can think of, which is to use it in an inspiration board. The romantic ruffles, the moody gray of the dress, and the blush pink on the model’s face and at the back of the runway. All of those things made me think of romantic flowers and frilly calligraphy, with a moody twist. The overall look reminds me of sunset over a city, particularly pink sunset over gray city, hence “Sidewalk at Sunset.”

More pink and green today! Although this time there’s something blue in it, too…

Sometimes a single photo can inspire an entire event, and in the case of this inspiration board, it’s the delicious peach pic from What Katie Ate. That lovely blue on the rim of the plate, the soft white linen napkin, and of course the baked peaches. Mmmm…. The romantic garden feel came next: lace wedding dress, antique cameo ring, garden roses. And though this palette works splendidly in the Palm House at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, I think it could also work for a pretty beach wedding.

Mood: sweet garden romance
Palette: sea foam blue, cameo peach, white linen

Another gorgeous estate… I just can’t help myself! I thought I’d stir up pink-and-green by making it peach and kelly green, with some fluffy white peonies, and then I threw some pineapples into the mix. Long a symbol of hospitality, pineapples are one of my favorite motifs (is that weird?), and they add an unexpected element to this otherwise classic and preppy Southern wedding (Drayton Hall, mint juleps, and we know how Southern gentlemen feel about their bow ties).

Mood: preppy, Southern elegance

In the past, I’ve mentioned that I have mixed feelings about the color red (which you’ll probably find amusing when you see some of my own wedding details) – sometimes I think it’s overly dramatic and awful, while other times I love love love it. Today, in this context, I love it. Inspired entirely by that cute skirt and floral sweater found via This is Glamorous, I wanted to create something that was a mix of vintage charm and modern elegance. I imagined a hometown wedding, quite possibly with the reception held at the bride’s childhood home (white picket fence and all!). A vintage look for the bride (satin v-back dress, feather head piece, pearls) jazzed up with red accessories and red lipstick, is the perfect fit at this wedding. Chintzy floral patterns can be sweet when used sparingly (perhaps as envelope liners or to decorate elements of the dessert table).

I seem to have a thing for elegant estates these days – there’s just something so exquisite and timeless about them, and they’re perfect inspiration for something as lovely as a wedding. With the Atlanta History Center as my imagined venue, I created an inspiration board for a bride with a love of Jane Austen (hair, dress, flowers), and a taste for lemons (cocktails, cake, decor). Because this isn’t a Jane Austen-themed wedding, or a lemon-themed wedding, these two motifs can blend seamlessly together for a beautiful look.

Are you using more than one motif in your wedding?

Mood: timeless garden romance
Palette: sweet lemon yellow, garden green, white linen

Row 3: Regency-era inspired dress by Alberta Ferretti from Brides, invitation with bumblebee by Ceci New York, dramatic arrangement with lemons from Martha Stewart Weddings, vintage handkerchief via The Fabled Needle
