Meika and Joe’s wedding was inspired by the natural beauty of their venue: the bride’s family home. Lush greenery and neutral florals were the perfect accent to an already charming place…
The ceremony flowers included geranium leaves, garden roses, hydrangea, citrus leaves and branches, olive branches, and fig branches. Meika and Joe had known each another for a long time because they were both from Winters, but it wasn’t until Meika went to Joe’s house to pick figs for her parents’ restaurant that they started chatting and become acquainted with one another. So fig branches, fruit and leaves were incorporated into the wedding details in subtle ways.
Meika’s bouquet included dahlias, peonies, anemones, mock orange, passion vines, sweet peas, mint, and scabiosa. Bridesmaids carried bouquets of garden roses, anemones, mint, sage, and sweet peas. Table arrangements included of an array of Café Au Lait dahlias, garden roses, and fresh mint. Decor also included fresh fruit from a local farm stand.
The bride’s family is Armenian, so dinner was full of Mediterranean dishes like grilled lamb and chicken, tabouli, hummus, stuffed grape leaves and more. Favors were jars of honey from a local farm.
Why did you choose this location for your wedding? My family owns the property – both my husband and I spent a lot of time playing in the creek and fishing as children. It had great potential and every time we are there we are reminded of our wedding day. We were inspired by the natural, rustic beauty of the terrain.
What was your favorite moment or part of the day? Walking down the aisle, seeing my husband, and being surrounded by friends and family who love and support us. Another really funny part was when we were announced as husband and wife, we played the song “I Can See Clearly Now (the rain is gone).” Our original wedding date was rained out, so guests appreciated our sense of humor.
What was the best advice you received as a bride? As long as you have libations and good tunes everyone will have a blast. More importantly, make sure you take in every moment of the day – you spend months planning for one day and it goes by much too quickly. Don’t let any wedding day mishaps get to you – it’s not worth it.
What advice do you have for other brides? Remember your wedding day is for you and your husband-to-be – get him involved in parts of the planning process. I know my husband was extremely proud of his contribution to making the site so beautiful. Also, make sure you get a videographer and watch your video on your anniversary every year to rekindle the romance from your wedding day. My sister didn’t have videographer and was so insistant that we hire someone. It is such an amazing film and I can’t say enough good things about it. The day goes by so fast, it is impossible to remember everything! Lastly, write your thank you cards as gifts come in. Don’t wait until the end. It is way too overwhelming.
Is there anything else that helps tell the story of the day? Our wedding was originally scheduled for May 28th. Everything was set up and ready for 370 guests and then a freak rain storm came in and ruined everything. We had to move everything to my parents’ restaurant. We had the band move, and whatever food was cooked and ready we served as a big buffet. Our floral designer was a champ and moved everything she could over to the restaurant so it had some wedding flair. We knew that we still wanted to get married at my parents property so we quickly re-scheduled, sending out fun post cards to our guests making light of the situation. They said “Let’s Try This Again” on one side and “Take Two” on the other.
