When Deirdre and Robert decided to wed in San Sebastián on the northern coast of Spain, they called on the talents of Lisa Vorce and Mindy Rice to create an intimate destination wedding for them and their 40 guests. The couple entrusted Lisa and Mindy with all of the design decisions, and the result was nothing short of delightful. Photos by the always talented Aaron Delesie.
Welcome bags included local treats and splits of champagne.
Exiting the Basilica, Deirdre and Robert were greeted by Basque dancers who did several traditional dances in their honor: “It felt like we had stepped back in time!”
The dinner reception was held in an historic Gastronomic Society just around the corner from the church. Says planner, Lisa Vorce, “Gastronomic Societies are an institution unique to the Basque country, and particularly to San Sebastián. Historically, they were a place where men would gather to cook, eat, drink and discuss all things related to cooking, eating, and drinking! It wasn’t until recently that women have been allowed to join as well. This was the first wedding hosted in this particular gastronomic society, and I can’t believe our local contacts were able to get us in.”
“Designing tabletops on the spot with Mindy [Rice] is quite magical,” says Lisa. “We never know which direction we’re going to go in. There’s always that one thing that dictates the design, and part of the excitement is finding that one thing. In San Sebastián it was the miniature kumquat trees from the local nursery. They were absolute perfection, and we knew we had to have them on the tables. From there, Mindy sourced fresh herbs, seasonal fruits, and flowers from local growers to create the stunning tablescapes.”
From Deirdre and Robert…
Why did you choose San Sebastian for your wedding? We traveled to San Sebastián together three years ago and loved it – it’s a city that has the charm of an ancient Spanish town, steeped in history, yet also provides the benefits you desire from a cosmopolitan Riviera destination. The food is spectacular, with more Michelin-rated restaurants per capita than Paris. All of this, coupled with the fact that San Sebastián has some of the best beaches in all of Spain, made it an ideal place for our destination wedding.
What was your favorite part of the day? Receiving what felt like a blessing from the entire city – when we exited the church we were greeted by over 200 locals, a traditional basque dancing troupe that performed an authentic wedding celebration dance (called the Jota), and even by an 80 year old woman who pulled us aside during the festivities to hold our hands and give us her blessing in Basque.
What is your advice to other brides? Realize that every detail of your wedding preparation is something to savor, from hair and makeup to putting on your dress. They’re are also beautiful and fun memories of the wedding day, so don’t rush through them or stress. Oh, and don’t forget to eat something during the day while you are getting ready!
