Anytime the St. Regis Princeville pops onto my radar, I get so excited – after all, it’s where I spent my honeymoon! Eunice and Larry chose it for their destination wedding last spring, and Nancy Neil captured it all beautifully…

Guests enjoyed a buffet of local Hawaiian favorites such as lobster Cobb salad, ahi poke, braised short ribs, steamed snapper, chow mein, and tofu stir-fry.

Why did you choose this location for your wedding?  Larry and I live in Los Angeles and we really liked the idea of having a destination wedding where we could bring our closest friends and family from across the globe together for a vacation. I grew up in Hawaii and it is such a special place – we knew there was no location more appropriate to have our wedding (aside from that, we wanted to make sure the wedding was well-worth the travel, and who doesn’t love Hawaii!). We scouted Oahu, Maui and Kauai, and as soon as we hit the north shore of Kauai, we knew we had to get married there. We fell in love with the rugged, lush landscape of the north shore, especially when juxtaposed against the beaches and ocean-scape. Larry and I were fortunate enough find a beautiful estate overlooking north shore’s Secret Beach. We had a late afternoon outdoor ceremony on the cliffside and it was truly a magical moment for us. For the reception, we decided to take everyone back to the St. Regis for dinner and dancing outdoors right on Hanalei Bay.

What inspired you when you were planning your wedding?  It was important to us to keep the wedding intimate, relaxed and simple. We had a small wedding with 60 guests and luckily many of them were able to join us on the island for the week. As a result, we were able to spend a lot of quality time with each and every one of our guests. Our closest friends and family are scattered across the world, and it was inspiring to finally have all of them in the same place at the same time, having a great time together creating lasting memories, many for the first time. In terms of décor, the ocean scenery and beautiful sunsets inspired the look and feel of the day. We let the beauty of the island speak for itself and took a less is more approach. We kept things simple, fresh, modern and relaxed. We used simple white flower arrangements of local orchids and hydrangea during the ceremony and reception. The bridesmaids all wore different dresses in muted shades of blush and grey, and the groomsmen wore light grey suits.

What was your favorite moment or part of the day?  It is so hard to choose one, but we would have to say it was the ceremony, specifically our vows. We each wrote our own vows, and it was so special for us to be able to present them to each other for the first time in front of our closest family and friends.

Did you include any traditions in your wedding?  Aside from abiding to the tradition of getting married in the bride’s home town, we didn’t include many traditions. For instance, we skipped the wedding cake, the bouquet toss and we had a dear friend of ours officiate the wedding. He did an amazing job and made the ceremony so personal and special.

What advice do you have for other brides?  It is really a matter of personal preference but we decided to do a first look before the ceremony and for us, it really worked. We wanted to share a moment by ourselves before the festivities and a big plus was that it helped us get rid of our nerves and enjoy the ceremony. Also, because we did a first look, we took our couples photos before the ceremony which gave us more time to celebrate with our guests.
