With all of our focus on how to make your wedding special, we thought it was important to highlight some ways to make your marriage awesome, too. Introducing “Snapshot of a Marriage,” a series from contributor Emily Westbrooks, who interviews couples on some of their secrets for a strong and successful marriage.

Vitaliy was an exchange student at college in Chicago, entering his senior year, when he met Candace. He was chatting with a few friends at a cafeteria table, and mentioned his home country Ukraine. Sitting just a few seats down, Candace perked up when she heard mention of the country that she remembered from her grandmother’s Christmas traditions.

When Vitaliy’s friends left, Candace scooted down and started asking questions about the Ukraine. She was sure Vitaliy could tell her more about her grandmother’s culture, the details of which had been lost to her family when her grandmother died. Says Candace, “I thought, He has the info I need and he’s going to give it to me.” Vitaliy, meanwhile, was unconvinced, returning to his room and telling his roommate, “Man, that girl is crazy!” But Candace was persistent, the couple started spending more time together, and they were soon boyfriend and girlfriend.

When the couple had been dating only a few months, Vitaliy’s parents and brother were killed in a car accident. Vitaliy returned to Ukraine to take care of his younger sister, and Candace decided to leave her last year of school to join him. When the time came to return to the United States, the couple made a big decision: “We decided we would adopt Vitaliy’s sister,” says Candace, “and we would go ahead and get married.”

Candace and Vitaliy started their marriage with a fifteen-year-old to care for. “It was the hardest time of our life,” says Candace, “but I really feel like it’s what strengthened our marriage.” And since their wedding, the couple has come up with ways to keep their marriage strong.

“Having an unhappy marriage is not an option,” explains Vitaliy. “So we have to make it work.” One of the ways they make it work is by having regular date nights. Candace adds, “And sometimes those date nights need to be maintenance nights, where we really check in with each other on how we’re doing in our marriage.”

The couple now runs a photography business together, with Candace joining full time late last year. Candace was a little worried about working so closely together, but has worked to find a balance between the roles of co-worker and wife. “Sometimes I need to be his wife, not his business partner. I have to ask myself, How can I love you today?”

This beautiful Wyoming wedding from Carrie Patterson is equally elegant and laid back, exactly what the bride was going for: “I wanted a classic wedding with a laid back vibe, so I tried to balance the fancy with the relaxed.”

Why did you choose this location for your wedding?  We knew we wanted to get married in the mountains and it was always my dream to get married in Jackson Hole since first visiting when I was 14. I spent the summers there in college and it is one of my favorite places on earth. When Trey and I first met, he had rented a house in Jackson for a month (which made me think we had something in common) and I was able to go out to visit him and show him around. Now we have a family home there, so it’s not just my place, but our place.

What inspired you when you were planning your wedding?  Having been in over 15 weddings, I knew what I didn’t want. When Elizabeth (our coordinator) showed me the Aspen Grove, I cried. I didn’t even know it existed and knew it was the place.

Did you include any traditions in your wedding?  On the back of our program we listed all our closest relatives who were unable to be with us because they were watching from heaven. For my mom’s aunt, we had a nosegay on a chair with her name on it.

What was the best advice you received as a bride?  HAVE FUN!

What advice do you have for other brides?  Your attitude and vibe will dictate the tone of the day. If you’re relaxed, your guests will feel that. Things are going to go wrong and sideways. Just go with it and enjoy the moment, your guests will too!

Lisa on her choice to wear a yellow dress (and the best ever re-use of a bridesmaid dress): “One of the first things I bought for the wedding was a tea length dress. However, whenever I put it on, I felt uncomfortable, like I was wearing a costume. When I thought back to the last dress that made me feel like a better version of myself, it was the one I wore in my best friend’s wedding. It was beautiful and infused with happy memories. So, I wore a yellow dress on my wedding day and donated the white one to charity.”

Says Lisa, “I’m sure I received loads of wonderful insight from others, but the best piece of advice I can remember was from our photographer, Gia Canali. She told me to hold my bouquet down low for photographs. I can definitely see the difference in the images!”

Why did you choose this location for your wedding?  Jared and I love to travel. When we became engaged, the first thing we agreed upon was our honeymoon destination: Japan. As we started looking at local venues and pricing out our options, we realized that the cost of the wedding could jeopardize our honeymoon. The guest list continued to balloon, and we found ourselves lamenting that we “had to” invite so-and-so in order to be polite. I’m not sure when it dawned on us, but we felt a sense of relief when we realized that this was our wedding and we could choose to invite no one at all. To have a ceremony with just the two of us was actually very appealing; it would allow us to stay within our budget and have an intimate ceremony. We began to explore courthouse weddings, but were disappointed to find that most of the venues look like office buildings. We wanted to find a way to have a beautiful wedding and still visit Tokyo. Through the wonders of the Internet, I discovered San Francisco’s City Hall. The beauty of the space, coupled with the fact that it was on the way to Japan, cemented the location for us.

What inspired you when you were planning your wedding?  The idea that we should do what we want.

What was your favorite moment or part of the day?  When my newly minted husband pulled me aside to read aloud a letter he had written for me. It totally caught me off guard and I was touched by his words and the gesture.

What advice do you have for other brides?  There are many ways to get married. Choose the way that best suits you and your partner.
