All month we’ve been posting sneak peeks of Matthew Robbins‘ beautiful new book, and with this last one we get to give a copy away to one lucky Snippet & Ink reader! But first, see how Matthew drew wedding inspiration from a sweet, floral pitcher (hello romantic artsy garden party!)…

These are some of the elements and colors Matthew used when imagining how this pitcher could come to life as a complete wedding look.

How sweet are these tiny canvas-and-easel escort cards? What a playfully sophisticated idea!

Don’t you love it?! See peeks at some of Matthew’s other chapters, Citrus, Schoolhouse Map, and Portuguese Bead.

So how can you enter to win a copy?! Since Matthew Robbins’ Inspired Weddings is all about how something simple (like a vintage pitcher) or personal (like a favorite candy) can inspire an entire event, we’d like you to leave a comment here with one thing or idea that is inspiring your wedding. It could be anything from an old postcard to a favorite song.

And of course you can purchase copies of this lovely book from AnthropologieAmazon, or Barnes & Noble.

Contest begins Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 5:30AM PST, and ends Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 11:59PM PST. The winner will be selected by Snippet & Ink, and notified by email. Please note: winner must live in the United States or Canada (excluding Quebec).

Today’s wedding is, as the bride puts it, “a love letter to Portland.” Instead of a traditional celebration, Laura and Brian did things their way with an unexpected twist: a double-decker bus tour of the city between the ceremony and dinner!

While guests arrived at the groom’s parents’ home and enjoyed treats, drinks, and a photo display, the bride and groom hid upstairs and sipped champagne together. Says Laura, “It was a wonderful hour before the ceremony and the hoopla of the day when it was just us, some champagne, and the opportunity to be alone with each other. It was a really special quiet time before the celebration.”

Everyone rode to the Rose Garden in a red London double-decker bus (a nod to the bride’s British grandmother who rode a bus like that to school in post-war England), and the bride and groom surprised their guests by hopping on the bus to the ceremony!

Says Laura, “The park remained open to the public during the ceremony and we’ll never forget walking through the gardens with strangers clapping, snapping our picture, and sharing well wishes. It just added to the uniqueness of our day.”

After the ceremony, everyone hopped back on the bus for a 2-hour tour of Portland, with with wine, beer, and appetizers, and stops at Portland landmarks including the Portland Theater for the Performing Arts (the Portland sign), Portland State University, Pioneer Place, the Portland Waterfront Promenade, and Voodoo Doughnuts where the newlyweds picked up doughnuts for their guests and bride and groom doughnuts for themselves.

After a few photo-ops, the tour ended at Meriwether’s Restaurant, just around the corner from the groom’s parents’ home.

Why did you choose this location for your wedding?  Portland is Brian’s hometown and a favorite place of ours together. We live in Washington, D.C., our families live 3500 miles apart, and our friends are all over, so we decided to pick Brian’s hometown as a way to share and showcase the beauty of the Northwest. My family had never been to the Northwest and our wedding was a great chance for them to see a new part of the country. We got married in the Gold Medal Rose Garden at Washington Park – a symbol of Portland (the City of Roses), a special family location, and the unmatched beauty of the literally thousands of flowers in bloom made this a perfect spot for our wedding day.

What inspired you when you were planning your wedding?  Casual but in control, classic and traditional with a twist. We also wanted some sort of surprise element (the bus) and used the bus as a reception prior to dinner. We wanted every choice to be a reflection of our relationship and us – if it wasn’t special, we didn’t do it. We intentionally created a day that reflected us, involved our guests in meaningful ways, and embraced the notion that our marriage requires the love and support of our families and communities to thrive.

What was your favorite moment or part of the day?  From the bride: The ceremony – it was the most incredible 30 minutes. I will never forget the joy and excitement of actually getting married and sharing our vows. Brian’s best friend officiated a ceremony that we had crafted together. We designed the ceremony to be inclusive of the family and friends gathered with us and included readings and a blessing from our parents, a community pledge of support, and a ring warming. The ceremony was as funny as it was heartfelt – you can see it in the photos as we are both laughing and crying! // From the groom: Hiding upstairs while our guests gathered at my parent’s house, before surprising everyone by joining them on the double decker bus. The time that we had together, alone, just the two of us, was amazing. We could settle down, reflect on the journey we’d been on to that point, and just share in our love right before getting to surprise our guests and going to get hitched!

What was the best advice you received as a bride?  A friend told me to take “mental snapshots” of the day. She encouraged me to pause during the day and remember how I felt in that moment with an image. Those are some of my favorite memories of the day.

What advice do you have for other brides?  The day of: RELAX – all you really need to be married at the end of the day is the groom, your rings, an officiant, and a fabulous outfit – everything else is gravy!* (*Caveat: In the days before: you need to be organized, create a schedule, and ask for help!)

I normally love all kinds of music, but for some reason during my pregnancy, pop music has been driving me crazy! I’ve been listening to lots more classical music, some Sam Cooke, and my favorite Pandora station right now is full of Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong (hence this week’s Happy Weekend photo). Maybe this goes along with food cravings and aversions? Any of you mommas out there experience any funny or unexpected pregnancy quirks?

Last month some awesome vendors came together at The Lab Event in Sonoma to showcase their talents and bring inspiration boards to life. Here are a few photos of how some of those vendors interpreted the Peony Pop inspiration board created by a Snippet & Ink reader…

I just love this sunburst invitation suite by Dauphine Press!

Gold and pink with pops of turquoise and orange played up the retro vibe.

Thanks to Tara Matthews for creating the fun inspiration board that inspired this look!

Black and white gingham, vibrant green flowers, and a unique venue make for a charmingly preppy wedding!

I love the shot of the bride giving her dad a high five. And I love the groom’s black and white gingham bow tie!

Lanterns lined the stairs to the church, and boxwood wreaths adorned the doors. A monogram “S” made of white rose petals marked the entrance.

30 trees strung with lights lined the aisles of the church. Says the bride, “All the trees found a happy home at my parents’ country house after the ceremony.”

Black and white gingham with green accents continued into the reception decor. Echoing the potted trees at the ceremony, favors were 16-inch spruce trees wrapped in burlap that guests were encouraged to take home and plant.

Libby says, “My favorite part of the day was the toasts. I loved listening as the people we love shared their support with us, it was especially sweet when Kevin’s usually silly friends spoke from their hearts.” Kevin’s favorite part of the day? “Hopping into the cab with Libby at the end of the day and knowing that we were leaving as husband and wife.”

Why did you choose this location for your wedding?  Lots of venues we looked at were arranged in a way that reminded us of a theater – we wanted a cozy atmosphere that was set up for chit-chat. Plus, neither of us felt very at home in a ball room. I loved the oversized furniture and decor, Kevin loved the old-fashioned feel, and we both loved the fact that the Dark Horse Distillery has two separate bars.

What inspired you when you were planning your wedding?  Ultimately, our inspiration was the event space. I tried to complement the space and incorporate our personalities into the decor.

Did you include any traditions in your wedding?  Kevin’s father passed away in 2010, so I used a piece of blue fabric from one of his old ties to sew a heart shape in the hem of my dress, so he could be a part of the ceremony (and had an instant, meaningful ‘something blue’). My something old (and borrowed) was my grandmother’s jewelry.

What was the best advice you received as a bride?  The best advice I received came from my sister-in-law, who recommended I set aside some time for just me and Kevin sometime during the reception, since the day goes by at warp speed. She was right – I’m con?dent the entire day lasted exactly one hour, even though this is incongruent with the invoices from my vendors.

What advice do you have for other brides?  My cliche advice: Don’t sweat the small stuff. At the end of the day you’ll be married, and nothing (not even enormous catastrophes) can negate that kind of happiness. My venue advice: Pick a venue with a feel that you’d like to complement rather than compete with. It’s much easier to create a polished look that way. My organizing advice: Keep a document with a picture and caption of everything you’re planning for your wedding. By the time you’re planning the thousandth detail, you’re likely to have forgotten the earlier parts of your plan. My budgeting advice: Splurge for signature con?rmation service on anything important you have shipped. One of my bridesmaids dresses was stolen off of my bridesmaid’s doormat, and the replacement didn’t arrive until the evening before the wedding (at a hefty price).
