I have to be totally honest – I am a little bit in love with this wedding, and especially with the bride and groom themselves. The Colorado mountain backdrop, the perfect blue sky, the fantastic chandeliers of candles and greenery at the reception? All the details are seriously beautiful, but none of them outshine sweet, fun Katie & Matt. I mean, how can you not love a couple so down to earth they included their hilarious first-ever conversation (via dating app) right in their ceremony program, for all their guests to see? Then there’s the tears in her eyes when he hugs her once they’re finally alone together after the ceremony, and the way they look at each other laughing on the dance floor… you just have to dive on in to see it all for yourself!
Did you include any traditions in your wedding? As something old, I wore a handkerchief that has been in Matt’s family for generations. In fact I was the twelfth Gordon woman to get to wear it! Unfortunately, it got lost between the ceremony and reception. I’m so sad about that, but also so grateful I got to be part of Matt’s family custom.
The deep red of Katie’s bridesmaids dresses is such an elegant option for fall and really stands out against the greens and browns of the stunning mountain scenery. Plus, they work beautifully with Katie’s stunning blush Monique Lhuillier tulle gown with floral appliqué, and the colors in the bouquets tie it all together!
It might be tradition for mom to help dress the bride but you don’t often see photos of the groom being helped by a family member. How sweet are these shots?
Why did you choose this location for your ceremony? We always knew we wanted to get married in the mountains and Devil’s Thumb Ranch offered the most beautiful outdoor setting. We also loved that in the worst case scenario, weather-wise, they had an amazing option for an indoor ceremony, but luckily the weather did cooperate!
Your ceremony in three words. Heart-felt, personal, romantic.
What was your ceremony music?
Processional: Tale As Old As Time, from Beauty and The Beast soundtrack.
Bridal Processional: The Luckiest by Ben Folds
Recessional: Part of Me by Tedeschi Trucks Band
Who officiated your ceremony? How did you choose him/her? Katie’s long-time family friend, the person who is basically her second dad, officiated the wedding. We knew we wanted someone close to us to officiate.
Did you include any traditions in your ceremony? We included a charge to the couple.
You can read Katie & Matt’s charge as part of their entire wedding ceremony script right here!
What were your vows like? We researched a few different non-traditional vows and finally found one that we connected with.
What was your favorite thing about your wedding ceremony? Exchanging our vows with one another.
Do you have any budget tips for other brides? Use a budget tracking spreadsheet to keep yourself honest and track everything – it really does add up quickly! Start out budgeting by deciding what you’d be willing to compromise on and what you wouldn’t. For example, I wasn’t willing to compromise on photography or videography because those are two things that last a lifetime, so I allowed a larger portion of the budget to be allocated towards that and made the rest work within amount that remained. Also, don’t be scared to DIY some things!
What advice do you have for other couples in the midst of planning a wedding? Remember to have fun, even when things get stressful, and remember why you’re planning your wedding. Sometimes in the midst of it all you can lose sight of the whole purpose, and it’s good to stay focused on that and to keep your sense of fun and positivity when things get hectic.
How would you describe your reception? Fun and funky. As much as we cared about the decor and what we were wearing, we just as equally wanted to make sure our reception would be a kick a** party with funky music all night long, and a great bar to keep the party going!
Why did you choose this location for your reception? We chose the Broad Axe Barn because of it’s beautiful architecture as well as it’s awesome deck guests could put to good use throughout the entire day and night. We wanted a space that felt cozy and intimate.
What inspired you when you were planning your wedding? The driving factor in every decision was to give a personal touch to every piece of the day. We wanted everyone to feel the love and celebration in every detail.
What type of cake or dessert did you serve? We had a three-tiered red velvet cake as well as an assorted dessert bar with fresh fruit tartlets, classic creme brulee with housemade biscotti and New York cheesecake.
What was your favorite moment or part of the reception? We had two – the speeches given by our best man and matron of honor (they crushed it!) and our first dance, to I Found You by Alabama Shakes.
If you had it to do over again, is there anything you would do differently? I wouldn’t do anything differently, the day was perfect!
