Oh, this dress…

There’s no reason you can’t have a lovely couples shoot after your wedding – whether for an anniversary, or as a post-wedding portrait session, or just for fun. That’s why I call them Love Shoots instead of Engagement Sessions! Tauri and Dylan decided to take some beautiful portraits with photographer Ciara Richardson, a few weeks after their Utah wedding.

I got Tauri to share a bit about the decision to take portraits after the wedding, as well as a bit about the wedding day, too.

Why did you decide to take formal photos?  We took the formals a few weeks after our wedding – we wanted to make sure we got enough pics of just the two of us since the wedding day was quite rushed and we opted not to do a first look. (It was all about the ceremony for us and looking back, I’m so glad we waited to see each other for the first time until I was walking down the aisle. It was perfect.) Aaaand… so we could dress up again! What girl doesn’t want to wear her wedding gown more than once?! Plus, we love having pictures at a totally different location from our wedding.

Tell us about your beautiful dress!  I grew up knowing my Mom would make my wedding dress – she made all of my homecoming and prom dresses growing up, and she’s the most talented person I know. Before starting, all I knew was that I wanted the top to be made of lace and that I wanted a poofy high-low skirt – we went through several drafts and ideas during the design process. My mom worked tirelessly in the months before the big day to make sure it was perfect and that it was done in time. She hand-placed and delicately hand-sewed each appliqué on the top. The lace is vintage, made even more beautiful by my mother’s talent and creativity. The skirt is layers upon layers upon layers of tulle. Pretty much the first time I tried on the finished dress was the morning of my wedding. When I stepped into the skirt, I felt something different in the back than I had anticipated – my mom had sewn a large section from her own wedding dress into my silk underlay slip. I lifted up the tulle and looked in the mirror and saw what she had done and knew immediately what it was. We both started crying – it was a very special moment for us. Seeing it all come together and having her there with me, I’ll never forget that moment.

What was your favorite moment or part of your wedding day?  My favorite moment hands down was the second I saw Dylan’s face when I was walking down the aisle with my dad. The whole day leading up to that point was so emotional for me because I just missed Dylan so much. There was a lot to do when I got to the venue that morning and I was definitely feeling the stress because my best friend wasn’t there to help me make decisions or give me a hug. The second I saw his smiling teary-eyed face, it was like I could just let go of all that emotion, and feel nothing but pure joy. It was the happiest moment of my life, knowing we had found each other and how lucky I felt that he loved me back. Neither one of us can remember much of what the Officiant said because we were just lost in our own little giddy world.

What was the best advice you received as a bride?  Best advice I received as a bride was to take time out of the stress to remember why I was planning this event. It makes it all even more special. And it gave me motivation to keep going when I felt overwhelmed.

What advice do you have for other brides? The advice that I would pass along (and wish someone had told me) is that it’s too much for one person to handle – you need to delegate. It’s very hard to let go of that power but I promise, you’ll enjoy the process a lot more if you let others help you, and no one expects you to do everything on your own. Most people mean it when they say, “Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help!”

A couple’s shoot is such a wonderful idea–just the two of you. No stress. I love the look of this shoot–aside from being beautiful, it has a old Hollywood glam Audrey Hepburn feel to it.. Congrats.

That dress!! How lovely. How did Tauri and her talented mother find vintage lace in that beautiful. soft blue? (Or is it gray?) Did they dye both the lace and the tulle? I can only imagine how stunning it must be in person!
