Winter Wedding at Canmore Nordic Centre :: Pearl & Calvin

To send you into the Valentine’s Day weekend, we have two gorgeous, snowy winter weddings to share with you today, starting with Pearl and Calvin’s celebration held against the dramatic glacial backdrop of Banff at Canmore Nordic Centre. And be sure to check back in a little bit for another winter wedding feature, in red and pink!

Tell us about your unique wedding crown.  I looked for months for an antique wax crown to wear and came across the most beautiful crown on Gossamer. This was one of the things I cherished the most and hopefully will be able to pass it down!

Why did you choose this location for your wedding?  We chose to have our wedding in the town of Canmore, Alberta. I grew up in Calgary, and spent many summers and winters hiking and snowboarding in the mountains around the Canmore/Banff area, so we chose this cozy, friendly mountain town for our winter wedding. Many of our guests had never been to Canada so we wanted to give them the real Canadian experience! The Canmore Nordic Centre was one of the venues for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.  We loved how historic this place was and fell in love with the wooden beams and huge windows facing the mountains.

What was the best advice you received as a bride?  My now husband always reminded me that we were preparing for a marriage, not for a wedding.

What advice do you have for other couples in the midst of planning a wedding?  Remember that it’s about the commitment you are making to each other so if not all the details work out, don’t worry!  At the end of the day, you’ll still be marrying the one you love!

The Ceremony

“We wanted our ceremony to be a celebration of the journey it took given that we had dated long distance for 5 and a half years. Family and friends were instrumental in supporting us through those tough years of long distance – reminding us of God’s faithfulness and provision for the two of us when we doubted if we would ever end up in the same city. We really wanted the ceremony to be a reflection of what marriage meant to us so the processional songs and the foot washing were elements that were important to us.”

Your ceremony in three words.  Christ-centered, intimate, rustic.

Who officiated your ceremony?  Our pastor from our home church flew all the way from Toronto to officiate our wedding. He and his wife have prayed for us and encouraged us during our relationship.

What was your ceremony music?  The ceremony music was very near and dear to our hearts. For our processional we played “Your Love is Strong” by Jon Foreman (lead singer for Switchfoot). It is the Lord’s Prayer with a few added lyrics. One of my favorite lines is “I walk to the meadow and stare at the flowers, better dressed than any girl on her wedding day.” I love how this reflects that the Creator of this Universe has so beautifully dressed even the flowers, reminding us of how much more He will provide for us! We chose two of our favorite hymns to sing and were so thankful to have 4 of our friends from the bridal party lead the worship portion of our ceremony. “Ho Hey” by the Lumineers was the song Calvin sang to me before he proposed, and we chose it for our recessional.

What was your ceremony reading?  Ephesians 5:21-30

What were your vows like?  We wrote our own vows but decided the week before the ceremony that we wanted to say them privately to each after the wedding. It was such a nice, intimate moment that we got to share after the wedding – we would highly recommend this for other couples!

What was your favorite thing about your wedding ceremony?  We didn’t do a first look prior to the ceremony so the most meaningful moment for me was when I walked down the aisle.  My eyes were filled with tears of joy that after the long journey of long distance, we were finally here at the altar. We played “O Come Let us Adore Him” by Shane & Shane, which has the simplest yet most meaningful lyrics. In the very last verse it says “We’ll Give Him All the Glory.” Our pastor started singing the words and we all followed suit and it brought us and many of our friends to tears.

The Reception

“We wanted something simple and laid back because Calvin and I both get nervous when we are the center of attention! We had a lunch reception at Iron Goat Pub and Grill, located on a hilltop facing the Three Sisters mountains. It is such a beautiful space with high ceilings, wood beams, and large windows facing the mountains. It was such a beautiful restaurant that we didn’t have to decorate it at all. We had the entire place to ourselves so it was very intimate. We wanted to have a relaxed atmosphere where guests could mingle and come and go as they pleased.”

What was your first dance song?  Our first dance song was Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” Two of our very gifted groomsmen sang and played this song for us. We danced the first verse and chorus and then danced with our parents and everyone joined at the end.

What type of cake or dessert did you serve?  My friend made our wedding cake, which was a vanilla mango curd cake with buttercream. This was the first wedding cake she has ever made and it was beautiful! My cousin also owns a macaron business so she made matcha green tea and earl grey vanilla macarons for us.

If you had it to do over again, is there anything you would do differently?  Make sure you ask someone to save you a piece of your wedding cake/dessert! We were too busy to eat! All our guests were raving about the food and we hardly got to enjoy it – we had to go back to the restaurant on a date after our wedding!
