A mermaid gown is the most sculpted shape you can put a print into, and Ankara fabric has the body to hold it. The dress fits close through the bodice and hips, then opens into a flare low on the leg, so the print wraps the figure like a second skin before it moves. That closeness is also why mermaids are the gowns I fuss over most at fittings. The twenty below are dressed for weddings, receptions, milestone parties and formal cultural events, each with shoes, jewellery, bag and hair. Some add corsetry, lace, ruffles, sleeves or trains; others stay almost plain. Pick by how you need to move as much as by how it looks.

Where the Flare Starts Changes the Whole Dress
Most people call any fitted gown with a flared hem a mermaid. In the workroom we separate them by where the flare begins, and with Ankara that point decides how the print moves and how you walk.
- True mermaid: the flare opens at or just below the knee. The most dramatic outline, and the most restrictive. You will take shorter steps and need a vent or slit to dance.
- Trumpet: the flare starts around mid-thigh. Still sculpted, much easier to walk and sit in, and kinder to stiff cotton print, which doesn’t fold as softly as crepe.
- Fit and flare: fitted to the hip and opening from there. Shows the least shape but moves almost like an A-line.
On a shorter figure I usually move the flare up a few inches; a knee-level flare on a petite body can make the legs look short. Taller brides and guests can take a lower flare comfortably. Ask your tailor how the flare is built, too. Inserted panels or godets let the print run upright on the fitted part and then spread, while a flare cut in one piece with the skirt can make motifs tilt at the sides.
At the first fitting, stand side-on to a mirror and look at the knee line. If the fabric pulls in creases toward the knee, the skirt is too tight there, and it will ride up when you walk.
1. Strapless Ankara Mermaid Gown

Strapless keeps the neckline clean so the print takes the attention. Everything rests on the bodice: internal boning, a firm back closure and, ideally, a waist stay inside that anchors the dress at your natural waist so it doesn’t slide down as you walk. The skirt can hug to the knee and open into a moderate flare that still lets you take a normal step. Metallic pointed heels, a structured clutch and short crystal earrings are enough, with a smooth bun or swept-back ponytail. Pull one subtle colour from the print for shoes or bag rather than adding a new one.
2. Off Shoulder Ankara Mermaid Gown

Folded fabric across the neckline makes this one gentle and feminine. The fitted bodice defines the waist and the close skirt runs smoothly over the hips, with a layered flare below the knee giving movement without too much weight. An off-shoulder neckline on stiff cotton gapes at the back unless the band is properly shaped, so I always pin it with the arms down and then raised. Nude or gold heels lengthen the leg, and a compact box clutch keeps things neat. Choose drop earrings or a delicate necklace, not both, and soft curls or a low twisted bun.
3. Ankara Corset Mermaid Gown

Visible seams and boning give an Ankara corset mermaid gown its sharp outline. A sweetheart or straight corset neckline frames the top, and running the same print through the fitted skirt keeps the line unbroken. Wax print has no stretch, so a corset mermaid is fitted twice: once at the waist and again at the knee, where the skirt is narrowest. Ask for room around the knees and a hidden back slit; without them you’ll shuffle. Sleek heels, a small metallic bag and studs or drops, with a neat updo so the busy bodice has a quiet frame.
4. One Shoulder Ankara Mermaid Gown

Asymmetry makes the mermaid look modern. A one-shoulder bodice, fitted waist and a skirt that follows the body before flaring near the knee is the base. The shoulder can be sleek or gathered to echo the flare. With a bold print, place a large motif near the shoulder or the hem; it gives the eye a path from top to bottom. Slim heeled sandals, a geometric clutch and one statement earring on the bare side, with a low side bun. The strap should be tested with your arms raised, because single-shoulder bodices creep sideways over a long evening.
5. Long Sleeve Ankara Mermaid Gown

Long sleeves suit cooler weather and modest dress codes and still feel glamorous. Close sleeves and a structured bodice keep the print smooth rather than bulky. With a sleeved mermaid, the armhole is the fitting point I watch: cut it high and close, and you can lift your arms without the whole gown riding up; cut it low, and every wave pulls the waist out of place. A round, square or modest V neck balances the coverage. Pointed pumps, a slim clutch and medium earrings, in solid neutrals if the cloth is very colourful. A low bun, waves or a wrapped ponytail suit it.
6. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Puff Sleeves

Puff sleeves turn a fitted gown into a statement. Keep the volume at the shoulder and taper to the elbow or wrist so the shape stays balanced, with a fitted bodice and smooth hips letting sleeves and flare share the spotlight. Broad shoulders look best with softer gathers; narrower shoulders can take a higher sleeve head for more volume up top. Heels in a colour from the print, a small solid clutch and understated earrings, with a sleek centre-parted bun as a clean contrast to the sculpted sleeves.
7. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Ruffle Hem

Ruffles at the hem make every step move. Keep the top smooth and tailored, and use two or three graduated ruffles below the knee rather than many narrow ones. Narrow ruffles in cotton print stack up heavy and flop. The ruffles can repeat the main print or alternate with a solid. Large motifs need matching across the bodice and upper skirt before the ruffles start, which is fiddly work and worth asking your tailor about. Platform heels for comfortable height, a simple clutch and polished earrings, with an elegant ponytail or compact updo.
8. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Tulle Flare

Tulle at the flare adds air to the solid structure of Ankara. Keep bodice and hips in the main print and introduce several layers of tulle near the knee. Matching tulle to the print’s background colour gives a quiet join; a contrasting shade is more editorial. The join itself needs care: tulle attached directly to stiff cotton can pucker, so I ask for it to be mounted on a lining and stitched under a clean Ankara seam. Slim heels, a beaded clutch and refined drops, with a soft updo or shaped curls. Formal receptions and milestone parties suit it.
9. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Lace Sleeves

Lace sleeves add texture and coverage around the arms. Choose lace in one of the print’s quieter shades so the two read as one dress. Sheer three-quarter or full sleeves soften the bodice, and a high neck makes it especially refined. Continue the print through the hips and trim the flare with lace. Lace is often less flexible at the elbow than it looks; bend your arm at the fitting and make sure it doesn’t pull or scratch. Classic pumps, a satin clutch and pearl or crystal earrings, with a low chignon.
10. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Peplum Waist

Want more waist definition without hiding the mermaid line? A small, structured peplum bridges the fitted bodice and hip-hugging skirt. Keep it narrow, and a little longer at the sides or back, so the hips still show. A deep peplum on a mermaid adds width exactly where the dress is meant to be slim. A simple neckline and clean sleeves stop it feeling crowded. Pointed heels, a compact top-handle bag and delicate earrings, with a sleek updo or shoulder-length waves. Placing a strong motif at the peplum draws the eye to the waist.
11. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Side Train

A side train gives drama without volume across the whole hem. Start with a fitted mermaid and attach a flowing panel near one hip, sweeping toward the back, in solid organza, tulle or matching Ankara. Keep the other side completely streamlined so the asymmetry looks intentional. Length is a judgement call: long enough to show, short enough to manage in a crowd. I always add a discreet wrist loop. Metallic heels, a slim clutch and sculptural earrings, with hair up or swept to the train side to echo the line.
12. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Detachable Train

A detachable train gives you two outfits. Wear a sleek Ankara mermaid with a removable overskirt or back train for the entrance, in matching print, plain tulle or organza. Remove it and the gown is lighter for the reception. The fastening is everything; an overskirt on a fitted mermaid tends to pull the waistband down at the back, so ask for a firm waistband with covered hooks or snaps spaced close together. Comfortable heeled sandals, statement earrings and a small clutch, with a polished bun that suits both versions.
13. High Neck Ankara Mermaid Gown

High necks give a colourful mermaid poise. Keep the bodice fitted and plain so the print and silhouette do the work; sleeveless looks sleek, fitted cap sleeves cover a little more. The skirt follows the hips before opening into a clean, symmetrical flare. Leave a finger’s width of room at the collar; a high neck on a fitted gown feels tight quickly in a warm hall. Elegant pumps, a small envelope clutch and earrings that sit close to the face, no necklace, with a high ponytail or smooth bun. Anyone wanting coverage at the neckline will like this one.
14. Sweetheart Ankara Mermaid Gown

Sweetheart necklines soften strict mermaid tailoring. The bodice needs to sit firmly and the print should follow the curve of the bust; I ask tailors to centre a motif at the dip of the sweetheart rather than letting it fall randomly. Thin straps add stability, or leave it strapless. A generous flare just above or below the knee balances the curve at the top. Neutral heels, a jewelled clutch and small drops, with loose waves or a low side bun. Ask for light boning and a smooth lining so you can still breathe at the waist.
15. V Neck Ankara Mermaid Gown

A V-neck draws a long vertical line through the upper body. Choose a modest or deeper V depending on the event and your comfort, with wide straps for support. A deep V on a fitted mermaid can gape when you sit, so a discreet mesh insert or a small hidden snap at the base keeps it flat. A neatly shaped waist, a fitted skirt and a clean flare finish the line. Pointed pumps, a structured bag and a short pendant or fine earrings, with a smooth blowout, braided updo or low bun.
16. Halter Neck Ankara Mermaid Gown

Halters lift the eye and give the mermaid a contemporary feel. A wide halter band supports better and sits more comfortably on the neck than a thin tie. The back can be open or partly covered depending on how much skin you like to show. Balance the fitted top with a medium-width flare. Slim metallic sandals, a cuff bracelet and a small clutch, with smaller earrings if the halter itself is decorated. A high bun or ponytail shows the neckline. Warm-weather receptions and outdoor parties are where I suggest it most.
17. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Front Slit

A carefully placed front slit makes a fitted mermaid much easier to walk in. Set it slightly off-centre for a softer look and at a height that still works when you sit. Since the shoe shows, choose polished heeled sandals or pointed pumps that coordinate with the print. The flare must stay wide enough on either side of the slit to keep the mermaid shape; cut too much and it reads as a pencil skirt. A secure lining helps the skirt move and covers you. A structured clutch, simple jewellery and a sleek bun or long smooth waves finish it.
18. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Cape

Something about a fitted gown with a flowing cape feels regal. Attach the cape at the shoulders or neckline so it falls behind without hiding the waist. Sheer organza looks airy; a light solid fabric gives more coverage. Keep the gown underneath sleeveless or simple. The cape should end above the train or line up neatly with it; two lengths that almost match look like a mistake. Pointed heels, studs and a small metallic clutch, with a smooth updo so the cape doesn’t gather around the neck. It makes a strong entrance.
19. Plus Size Ankara Mermaid Gown

Plus-size mermaids look their best when support, proportion and comfort drive the design. A structured bodice with wider straps or fitted sleeves, a secure waist and a skirt that skims the hips rather than squeezing them is the starting point. Starting the flare slightly above the knee gives more walking room and a smoother line. Medium-scale prints are easiest to place across curved seams, though a skilled cutter can make any motif work. Supportive underwear, breathable lining and a concealed stretch panel keep it wearable for hours. Stable block heels, a structured clutch, statement earrings, and a side-parted updo or soft curls.
20. Ankara Mermaid Gown With Matching Headwrap

A matching headwrap from the same cloth gives a coordinated cultural finish. Keep the gown’s neckline simple so wrap and print don’t compete, with a fitted short-sleeve or sleeveless bodice, smooth hips and a full flare. For the wrap, I’d cut from a quieter part of the pattern or a single repeating motif; the busiest section of the print on your head and your body at once is a lot. Ask your tailor to set aside enough fabric when cutting the gown. Gold heels, a solid clutch and medium earrings visible under the wrap complete it, and a necklace only if the neckline feels bare.
Sitting, Stairs and Dancing in a Fitted Skirt
A mermaid behaves well in a fitting room and then meets a church pew, a car and a dance floor. I run brides and guests through a short routine before I sign off on the hem.
Sitting
Sit near the front edge of the chair with your back straight. Sinking back strains the seams at the hip and creases the print across the lap. If you can’t sit comfortably at the fitting, the hips need letting out, even by a little.
Stairs and cars
Lift the flare slightly at the front with one hand and take each step sideways if the skirt is tight at the knee. For cars, sit first and then swing both legs in together; stepping in one foot at a time puts all the strain on one seam.
Dancing and the long night
A back vent or a modest slit gives the knee room to bend. A wrist loop or bustle lifts any train off the floor so no one steps on it. Bathroom trips in a fitted gown are easier with a side zip and a friend; keep a couple of safety pins in your bag in case a seam starts to go.
A Mermaid Is Only as Good as Its Knee Line
One silhouette, twenty moods. Necklines, sleeves, lace, ruffled hems, capes and detachable trains all change how a mermaid feels. What makes one wearable is less visible: support, fabric placement, and enough room at the knee for the way you’ll move that day. Work with a tailor who is comfortable with close-fitted seams and can move the flare to suit your height. Then let shoes, jewellery, bag and hair support the gown, and keep the print as the star.
