If you want a pale outfit for the photos before the ritual, I’d suggest changing into a second, washable outfit before the paste rounds begin.
1. Yellow Dhoti Pant Haldi Outfit

The First Hour After the Paste Comes Off
How quickly you deal with the outfit decides how much of the stain stays. This is the routine I give brides and their families.
- Scrape off loose paste with a blunt knife or spoon. Don’t rub, which pushes the dye deeper.
- Rinse the stained area from the back with cold water. Hot water and ironing set turmeric, so avoid both until the stain is gone.
- On washable fabric, work in a little liquid dish soap or detergent, leave it for several minutes, then rinse and wash as usual.
- Dry washable cotton and linen in direct sunlight. Sunlight fades turmeric noticeably, often more than a second wash.
- For silk, embroidered or dry-clean-only pieces, blot gently and take them to a cleaner who handles ethnic wear within a day or two, and tell them it’s turmeric.
Avoid chlorine bleach on anything coloured, silk or embroidered. Skin and nails stain too, so I suggest the bride wears old flip-flops and keeps her nails painted in a colour that won’t show a yellow tinge before the wedding photos.
